As I travel Wyoming I have heard people discuss the National Debt and Deficit Spending as if just balancing the Budget will cure the National Debt.

Letter from Jack Van Mark

Here’s why I’m supporting Bill Winney in 2008.

It has been said that a community is like a ship; everyone ought to be prepared to take the helm. My choice for the man to take the helm of representing Wyoming in the U.S. House of Representatives is Bill Winney.

What skills and abilities does Bill Winney bring to this job? Bill believes that Congress has a responsibility to pay attention to Federal agencies. He believes that issues should be resolved short of states having to resort to going to the courts to settle differences with the federal government.

I have respect for someone who has navigated through the budgeting process in Washington, D.C. because I have been there with the responsibility to administer the Rural Electrification program during the Reagan Administration. I know how easily funding requests can become huge overblown government projects and that it takes a person who knows where to look in the line item allocations to keep the cost of government down.

We could spend a lot of time talking about the EARMARKS and the deceptive ways to fund private projects but the only way to control this practice is to eliminate it.

This country is on the cusp of major energy decisions. The price per barrel of oil is at historical record highs. Being the Commanding Officer on a nuclear submarine underlines Bill’s understanding of the need for developing non-traditional sources of energy. This need goes far beyond what the military requires and he understands this country needs to work to break loose from the ties to foreign oil.

I agree with Bill’s statement that, "Wyoming has enormous energy reserves. It is incumbent on us to ensure these are developed effectively. At the same time protection of our beautiful land is just as important. The world’s appetite for energy will only increase. We must develop these reserves and professional structure to ensure a sustainable long-term economy in Wyoming."

Some may ask what a Navy CO knows about agriculture in Wyoming. I believe that Bill Winney has the drive and willingness to examine the legislation affecting agriculture in Wyoming. He will invite Wyoming agriculture producers to give him input for our position. Bill has a receptive ear to agriculture. He recognizes that agriculture plays a large part in the stewardship of our wide-open spaces and wants to work to maintain our state’s unique qualities that attracted him to make Wyoming his family’s home.

Immigration is one of our most contentious issues. It affects agriculture more than any other segment of our economy. Bill believes that the U.S. must secure our borders first, then deal with illegals already here. Illegal by definition means it is unlawful and must be treated as any other unlawful violation.

Another serious issue confronting the nation is that of abortion. Bill believes that we cannot pursue liberty and happiness without first protecting life. That means no matter how small that life may be including that of the unborn.

On May 14, 1948, the nation of Israel was granted land for a Home Land. Bill believes in the right of the nation of Israel to exist and maintain its borders. He believes that the United States should fully support the State of Israel.

Every election is important because it is an opportunity for us to examine and choose someone to go to Washington, D.C. to speak for Wyoming. Wyoming’s Congressperson is one among 435 other voices with agendas for their own constituencies. Wyoming needs a strong, healthy, energetic and committed person who can effectively carry the Wyoming message to Congress.

I believe Bill Winney will carry Wyoming’s message to Washington, D.C. I’m voting for Bill Winney.
